The Dutch highway A1 (Dutch: Rijksweg) begins in the east of Amsterdam at the junction Watergraafsmeer and continues into the German highway A30 in the east of the country.
The A1 is also known as the E231, between Amsterdam and Amersfoort (east of the junction with the A28/E232) and as the E30 westward until and into Germany (which it crosses entirely).
Along the way it passes the cities of Amersfoort, Apeldoorn, Deventer, Hengelo, Oldenzaal and Enschede.

Hitching the A1
Legend: (very good) | (good) | (average) | (bad) | (senseless)
- (1) Diemen-Noord
- (2) Diemen
- Knooppunt Diemen
- Chance to get on to the highway A9.
- (3) Muiden If you want to go eastwards, walk up this ramp until you find a delivery road. Walk along this for some meters until you reach the service station Honswijck! (good)
- Honswijck / Hackelaar (very good)
- Good service station (on both sides) to get lifts towards Amsterdam or on the other side towards all of the Netherlands. Check Muiden-page for how to get there.
- (4) Muiderslot (good)
- Knooppunt Muiderberg
- Chance to get on to the highway A6.
- (5) Naarden-West
- (6) Naarden-Vesting
- (7) Bussum (average) - (bad)
- Towards Amsterdam, this ramp is not really useful. No hard shoulder, fast cars and nearly no space to stop for you. You could walk towards the roundabout and try it there, also the service station 100m further might be an option.
- (8) Blaricum/Huizen (very good) in direction Amsterdam/ There is lots of space for cars to stop on the on-ramp, which is next to a carpooling place, (average) in direction of Amersfoort where there is less space for cars to stop.
- (9) Laren
- Knooppunt Eemnes
- Chance to get on to the highway A27.
- (10) Soest
- (11) Eembrugge
- (12) Bunschoten
- Neerduist (good)
- (13) Amersfoort-Noord (good)
- For hitchhiking towards Amsterdam, there's some space on the hard shoulder, so possible to hitchhike. Cars drive along quite fast, so take care.
- Knooppunt Hoevelaken
- Chance to get on the highway A28.
- (14) Hoevelaken
- (15) Barneveld
- Also junction towards the Dutch A30.
- (16) Voorthuizen
- Tolnegen (good)
- On both sides. Good for lifts towards Amersfoort, Utrecht or Apeldoorn.
- (17) Stroe
- Jool-Hul
- Only on lane towards direction Oldenzaal.
- (18) Kootwijk
- Lucasgat / De Hucht (average)
- On both sides. Not that much traffic, but doable.
- (19) Hoenderloo
- (20) Apeldoorn-Zuid
- Knooppunt Beekbergen
- Chance to get on to the highway A50.
- (21) Voorst
- De Paal / Vundelaar (very good)
- On both sides, great to get lifts further towards Germany or Amersfoort and Utrecht. The one to the west is also reasonable to get a ride towards Arnhem. Towards Zwolle waiting times may be slightly longer, since from Hengelo, Almelo and Enschede it is faster to driver over national roads to Zwolle, or over national roads via Hardenberg towards Hoogeveen, Leeuwarden and Groningen.
- (22) Twello
- (23) Deventer (good)
- Good in both directions
- (24) Deventer-Oost
- (25) Bathmen
- (26) Lochem
- Bolder / Struik (very good)
- (27) Markelo (average)
- Enough space along the hard shoulder to hitchhike, but not that much traffic here. Doable.
- (28) Rijssen (average)
- In direction Hengelo this ramp is quite ok, nevertheless no hard shoulder (only up when you're nearly on the highway), but very few traffic so standing along the road is possible.
- Knooppunt Azelo
- (29) Borne-West (good)
- Small ramp between two junctions, nevertheless good hard shoulder and enough space for cars to stop.
- Knooppunt Buren
- (30) Hengelo
- (31) Hengelo-Noord (good)
- t' Lonnekermeer / Veelsveld (very good)
- (32) Oldenzaal
- (33) Oldenzaal-Zuid (good)
- The ramp for you if you come from Enschede! Easy to get cars towards Germany and into the Netherlands, average waiting time 7 minutes! In the other direction also a busy ramp for traffic towards the whole country. Has been a very good ramp, but recently it seems to be getting worse. Waited 2,5 hours (2 people) on a Tuesday morning without getting a ride towards Germany. When hitchhiking back in direction Hengelo, got a ride within 2 minutes, though.
- (34) De Lutte (bad)/ (senseless)
- Small ramp with a tiny petrol station before, but no real traffic except some trucks. Don't try it here, better walk down to Bentheimerwald services, slightly over a kilometre down the road. Place is well frequented by cops, keep that in mind when you wish to take a shortcut along the motorway. More in the section De Lutte
- Bentheimerwald (average) The old customs, now converted to service station. right on the border.
- Border Netherlands - Germany, the highway is going over to the German A30. Take a look there for further information about this way.
