Hitchhiking is an unknown concept in Indonesia, so it won't be easy to get around by thumb.
Hitching in Java, Sumatra, Bali and Borneo is very easy. In Java you hardly wait ten minutes for your next truck. Traffic is very slow though, if you want to cross the country dont make the mistake to take a 1 month visa. Hitching on ferries is possible, you may get a seat (you may be hidden though) in a truck. Surabaya is the place to go from Java to Borneo.
