The 888 Project
The 888 Project seeks to ask all European nations to hitchhike from all corners of the European continent (whether it is from Belfast, Istanbul, Helsinki or Lisbon) to arrive at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris on 888...August 8th, 2008.
Hitchhikers will first have to reach the Eiffel Tower, this world-renowned French lighthouse.
They will then have to join on a march to the Palais de Tokyo http://www.palaisdetokyo.com --located right across the Eiffel Tower--at 8p.m.
- We need you to take part and organize this official European Hitchhiking Event to Paris from every single country in Europe.
- We need you to succeed and get hitchhiking recognized as a genuine means of transportation.
- We need you to convince people to hitchhike and pick up hitchhikers.
Hitchhike to Paris on 888...August 8th, 2008...08/08/2008...888
Why arriving at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris?
The History of the 888 Project
The reason why the finish line of the 888 project was set up at the Palais de Tokyo is partly because of the story associated with the name Tokyo. Before the 888 project was organized, there were a large number of signs regarding Tokyo:
The Tokyo Hitchhiking Sign
On December 2nd, 2007, Pascal Dumond and Fabrice Renucci, respectively from Quebec and France, drew a "TOKYO" hitchhiking sign to get back to Lille, France from Rotterdam, the Netherlands...
The Palais de Tokyo Hitchhiking Race
On December 3rd, 2007, Erik Van Loon, a Dutch artist, called his two friends Pascal Dumond and Fabrice Renucci and told them that their Tokyo hitchhiking sign had inspired him to create a Hitchhiking Race to the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. His idea was actually to tell people that it was race to Tokyo, Japan before telling them that it was actually going to be organized in Paris.
The free Tokyo plane tickets
On December 4th, 2007, Erik Van Loon was offered three plane tickets to "Tokyo" from a friend of his. He gave Fabrice and Pascal a call around 2 a.m. asking them to call him back before 10a.m. if they wanted to go to Tokyo with him. Fabrice did not check his messages before noon. As for Pascal, he actually checked his voicemail shortly after 2 a.m. but did not call back Erik since he was sure that it was a joke (especially after the previous two events).
Fight for Love
On December 16th, the international art group Sun Rain Stars (www.sunrainstars.com) led by Erik Van Loon (www.erikvanloon.com) unveiled their latest art show Fight For Love in Tokyo. More information about Fight For Love: www.sunrainstars.com
The Palais de Tokyo on 888...August 8th, 2008...08/08/2008
The location of the Palais de Tokyo is prefect because it is located right across the Eiffel Tower. The Palais de Tokyo is a contemporary art museum which has been seeking to bring together the best from international and French creators ever since it opened up in 2002. The museum sees contempary art as a detached, independent creation from the point of view of the artist.
The Speeches
- The Organizers
Once the European hitchhikers will have arrived, the three organizers--Pascal Dumond, Fabrice Renucci and Erik Van Loon--will address the hitchhikers.
- Hitchhiking
This address will be followed by the speech of Ludovic Hubler (www.ludovichubler.com), a Frenchman who has just come back from a five-year hitchhiking journey around the world. During his trip, Ludovic organized conferences in more than 200 schools, met a large number of NGOs and organized some international events to create a network between them.
- The Sustainable Side of the Project
The three organizers are also part of an French association called Nature Propre (www.nature-propre.org). The association aims at promoting sustainable development through a certain number of programs and the 888 project is one of the key projects of Nature Propre. Guillaume Mouton and Thomas Chretiennot will deliver a speech about the substainable side attached to the project.
The Art
On August 8th, 2008, hitchhikers will join on a march from the Eiffel Tower to the Palais de Tokyo starting at 8p.m. The Sun Rain Stars will upload the photos taken by the hitchhikers. They will edit the photos, print them out and then Erik Van Loon will create European directly in the Palais de Tokyo.
The 888 Project and European
European is an artwork in which all the participants of the 888 project will take part by making photos of certain body parts of their "hitchgivers" throughout their hitchhiking journey.
Each participant will have to shoot 12 close-up photos from 4 angles (front, back, left, right) of the human body. In total we will get 48 photos of each participant. Together with the photos of all the other participants, the Sun Rain Stars led by Erik Van Loon, will make a four-dimensional picture of European( which is a photo of 1 x 2 m (w x h) of a human of 1,94 m high which he will create with scissors and glue like a collage.

The checkpoint cities
The goal of the checkpoint cities is to help hitchhikers through their journey through evening meetings and having volunteers on the spot every at dawn. The goal of having several rings is to ensure that we help hitchhikers to progressively get to Paris in all safety.
- The Morning Volunteers
There will be volunteers helping hitchhikers leave any given city on any given ring on the actual hitchhiking spot at dawn. The volunteers will provide hitchhikers with tips and advice.
- The Evening Meetings
Every evening, in any given city, there will be an evening meeting. People who do not have any accomodation and find a place to stay. Hitchhikers can exchange good stories and share tips and advice.
Please write down your name next to your city and mention whether you would like to be a morning volunteer or a meeting organizer:
- If you are a morning volunteer you can then edit the information regarding the spot hitchhikers have to leave from and how to get there
- If you are a meeting organizer, you can then edit the meeting details once you click on your city]]

Help from Paris on 888
Hosting
We need to contact the Paris community in order to host all the Europeans who are coming to Paris on 888
If you cannot find a host through Couchsurfing, Hospitality Club or BeWelcome then:
Please register on the I Need A Place To Stay Sign Up Page if you are looking for a place to stay
Please register on the I Can Host Hitchhikers Sign Up Page if you live in Paris and you are willing to host people.
Call Center
This subgroup was designed to find 2 teams who can work on D-Day- 888- to answer hitchhikers' phonecalls. What these two teams will need to do to help the 8 8 8 project:
- Have a landline phone number -Be at home on the 8.8.8 throughout the whole day and evening
- Know the hitchhiking spots on a circumference of 200 ks around Paris
- Know the Paris transportation system so that the hitchhikers who are lost can easily reach the Palais de Tokyo
- Have a list of people who can host (they do not necessarily need to be on C.S. on H.C.
- we will establish this list and send it to the two teams)
Please register on the
I Want To Volunteer For The Call Center Team 1 Sign Up Page or the
I Want To Volunteer For The Call Center Team 2 Sign Up Page if you would like to volunteer in one of our teams.
